Remodel Your Kitchen
It may not seem like it, but the kitchen can be a healthy beacon of light in an otherwise unhealthy home. If you dislike your current setup, though, you and your family likely find it difficult to tolerate being in the kitchen long enough to prepare a healthy meal. Replacing the counter surfaces, cabinets, appliances—and, if you are feeling ambitious, the flooring—can make this area of your home more pleasant. This will make you more inclined to cook, cutting out both the caloric and monetary expense of eating out.
If your home was built before 1978, there may be lead paint on some of its interior surfaces. The presence of lead paint leads to the presence of lead particles, which could be found in dust, paint chips and even the soil outside your home that your spouse and children track inside. Unfortunately, eliminating lead from your home is not a do-it-yourself project. You will need to enlist an expert to eradicate this pesky, potentially harmful substance for good.
Build an Exercise Room
Find a treadmill or stationary bike, a couple of kettlebells, some dumbbells and maybe a bench and some free weights. Voila! Now you have an exercise room. Your family members will be much more motivated to exercise if they can do it without even having to leave the house. If convenience does not do the trick, having to stare at the equipment when you are not using it should serve as an effective motivator.
Seal Your Home
Sealing your windows and doorframes is especially important if anyone in your family suffers from severe allergies or asthma. Rodent and insect droppings commonly trigger asthma attacks, so you must be sure to cover cracks and holes with weather stripping and caulk to keep them outside. Pay close attention to doors, windows and vents that lead outdoors.
Replace Your HVAC System
Your HVAC system’s effectiveness or lack thereof plays a hugely important role in determining your home’s indoor air quality. Older systems lack the air filtration capabilities of newer models, and often allow allergens inside as a result. Even up-to-date HVAC systems can be improved through the installation of a retrofitted whole-house filtration system. Unfortunately, like lead removal, this is not a do-it-yourself project. Air conditioner repair in Austin and other locales can do wonders for your family’s short-term and long-term health, though.
